A Cumbrian wrestler will be throwing his weight about in the revival of an iconic ITV show.

Johnny Moss will be performing in front of millions of viewers each Saturday afternoon, after it was announced World of Sport Wrestling will return to screens.

Johnny, who runs a wrestling school in Egremont, was one of the headline performers in a New Year's Eve special and has been confirmed in the line-up for the new series to be aired this summer.

World of Sport was originally shown every Saturday afternoon between 1965 and 1988, and regularly attracted more than 15m viewers, featuring names like Big Daddy and Mick McManus.

Johnny said: "This August will mark my 20th year in the wrestling business and if you'd told me all those years ago I'd be appearing on national television every Saturday I would never have believed you.

"I never thought I would ever see wrestling back on terrestrial TV in the UK, let alone it its old time slot on Saturday afternoons.

"It's actually quite mind blowing. I think anyone who watches is in for a big surprise – this really is going to be something special and I am incredibly proud to be part of it."

Other names confirmed for the new series include Grado, who won the British Championship on the New Year’s Eve recording, Sha Samuels, Kenny Williams, Viper, El Ligero, Zack Gibson, Rampage Brown and Nick Aldis.

The series has been commissioned after ITV struck a deal with United States giants Impact Wrestling, and tapings take place on May 25 and 26 in Preston Guild Hall.

Jeff Jarrett, chief creative officer for IMPACT Wrestling, added: "The WOS brand is etched in professional wrestling tradition.

"My family's lineage in the industry dates back 70-plus years, so I am honoured for the opportunity to work on reviving the legacy of this historic British series."
