A cannabis dealer ran an illegal "marketplace" for fellow drug users, a court heard.

But Eileen Mulgrew's bid to profit from peddling the illicit substance led to her falling foul of the law.

And at Carlisle Crown Court, Mulgrew, 37, of The Crofts, Silloth, was jailed for 28-weeks.

Gerard Rogerson, prosecuting, said police swooped on her home on November 25 and found £1,800 worth of cannabis - including ready-bagged deals. Almost £2,000 cash was also seized, along with a mobile phone containing evidence of supply.

In an interview Mulgrew accepted dealing the drug to others, and later admitted possessing it with intent to supply.

She had a "heavy cannabis addiction", the court heard, and bought extra for others. Any she didn't like herself "she would supply to 'idiots', as she put it", said Mr Rogerson.

A probation officer report revealed Mulgrew had "smoked cannabis every day for the past 20 years". In addition she "does not appear to appreciate the serious of the situation she finds herself in".

John Cooper, defending, said Mulgrew was a "well-liked and well-respected" woman within her community.

Mulgrew's "client base", he stressed, had comprised a "small group of friends". He added: "She had, effectively, four or five people she was supplying on a regular basis."

However, Recorder Ahmed Nadim rejected that submission, saying she had been "operating a marketplace".
