Villagers, councillors and children got their hands dirty to clean up a west Cumbrian village as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

The group met at the shops on Seaton's Main Road, before splitting up to tackle problem areas in the village.

Pupils from Seaton Junior School's council picked litter on Friday, while workers from FCC Environment cleaned bus shelters and swept roads.

Parish councillors Mark Jenkinson, Celia Tibble, Ken Sloan and Daniel Horsley led volunteers around the village brightening it up, while Suzanne Lane, who sells ENJO cleaning products, restored street signs around Seaton to their shiny best.

Seaton Service Station also sent their area manager and a director to roll up their sleeves, as well as providing refreshments.

Toni Magean, town centre area manager at Allerdale Council, helped organise the event and the council's Street Scene team were due to reapply dog fouling warnings on footpaths.

Mr Jenkinson said: "I was contacted by Keep Britain Tidy in my role as a councillor and we're a really good village for turning out for things like this.

"I thought it was a good thing to support and I'm really happy people have done that.

"It's not an untidy or dirty place but this gets people to take ownership of their village."

The national campaign hoped to get 500,000 people across the country outdoors and active to clear rubbish in their communities.
