More women are cycling more often thanks to a new biking programme that aims to get women out on their bikes for fun.

Rides put on by HSBC Breeze have now reached Great Corby, near Carlisle, and the first ride out took place on Saturday.

Organised by British Cycling trained Breeze Champion, Sara Varian, the free bike rides explore local routes in small friendly groups.

The rides take place all year round and are ideal for women who are looking to get back on a bike. Organisers say they are also a great way to make new friends.

Saturday's 18-mile ride set off from outside the Queen Inn pub.

It followed an undulating route following the River Eden south towards Ainstable before heading east and north skirting the Pennines to head back to the start point.

Sara Varian, Great Corby Breeze Champion, said: "Our rides are friendly and sociable on quiet rural roads with optional cake and coffee stops and no one is left behind.

"The pace and distance vary for each ride - so hopefully there is something to suit everyone."

Councillor Anne Quilter from Carlisle City Council, which works in partnership with British Cycling, said: "Carlisle City Council is proud to support British Cycling in offering opportunities for people to take part in the Breeze bike rides."

Breeze is part of British Cycling’s programme of free events, activities, information and support, designed to help and inspire people of all ages and abilities to get back on their bikes.

The rides are free.
