Two Cumbrian sisters are preparing fly half way across the world and tackle Peru's famous Inca Trail in memory of their late mother.

Nicola Reay and Fiona Ismay will be venturing high up into the Andes to the remote settlement of Machu Picchu - despite having no previous experience of international trekking.

They will be equipped with sleeping bags and backpacks and for three nights will be camping in sub-zero temperatures while covering nearly 30 miles at altitude through sub-tropical jungle and cloud forest during the day.

They will also find themselves climbing to a height of 4,000m - three times higher than Ben Nevis.

Both Nicola and Fiona decided to undertake the challenge to raise £1,000 for the Eden Valley Hospice where their mum, Fay, received care and have paid for the trip themselves.

In the run up to their challenge the sisters have introduced a mascot - Paddington Bear - famous for being from "deepest, darkest Peru".

However, he will be left behind when they set off on their mammoth challenge on May 26, which will also see them hand in their mobile phones to guides as part of a "digital detox".

"We both enjoy walking in the Lake District with family and friends but this trip is the absolute ultimate hike," Fiona, who is 42 and works for Lloyd Carlisle BMW, said.

"It is something we have been drawn to and now we can help other people by doing it."

"The hospice means a lot to us, Nicola who is 45 and co-owner of Wigton-based Reays bus and coach company, said.

"Our mum - Fay - was cared for there, so we know first-hand what great work they do and how much the money can help with the special care they give.

"The hospice is also Reays' charity of the year for 2017."
