Golden athletes at an Egremont School are tackling a one mile run each day this week - as well as celebrating securing a sports award.

St Bridget's Catholic Primary School has been presented with a Gold School Games Mark for its commitment to sport.

And youngsters have been getting active in the playground as the school holds a Health and Safety week.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be awarded Gold in the School Games Mark as it highlights the sporting achievement of the children in our school," said headteacher Suzanne Smith.

"It wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for our sports coordinator, Viv Newby, who works tirelessly organising and ensuring children are ready for sporting events."

The School Games Mark is a government-led awards scheme, launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the developing competition across their school and into the community.

Schools can be awarded either bronze, silver or gold awards depending on the quality of their sport provision.

Mrs Smith said: "Our drive is to ensure we have fit and active children by providing as many opportunities for them to exercise as possible, regardless of ability.

"The presentation of the award coincides with our Health and Safety themed week in school. As part of this the junior children have been set a challenge to walk, jog or run a mile a day around the playground."

The Health and Safety week has also seen children take part in gymnastic classes, listen to a talk from Specsavers, learn about personal hygiene and receive a visit from a nurse.
