The youngest residents of a Cumbrian village have been showing how getting fit can help fight cancer.

Pupils of Oughterside Foundation School, in Oughterside near Aspatria, have just completed their own Race for Life fundraising event in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The village school, which has fewer than 60 children, has raised almost £1,100.

The school chose to hold its event in early 2017 as a way of promoting the benefits of physical activity among the children after the Christmas and new year period.

Oughterside School also has its own annual fundraiser in June, traditionally the month that Race for Life events are held in schools and parks across the country.

Headteacher Sarah Jardine said: "We decided to do it in February as it was a month where we are all trying to get fit after Christmas.

"We all did various distances, depending upon the age group.

"Our older children ran around the village, which is approximately two miles, while the younger ones did laps of the playground."

She added: "We have just counted the money we have collected in school for our Race for Life and we've raised £1041.50 for Cancer Research.

"This is more than we could have ever dreamed of raising. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored the children and collected sponsor money."

Cumbrian schools can sign up now to host their own Race for Life event in June. Resources are available online for teachers and staff.

The rallying call has also gone out for women and girls to sign up to take part in Cumbria's 2017 events which will be held in Carlisle over the weekend of June 17 and 18.

On June 17, Cancer Research UK will bring the Race for Life Pretty Muddy course back to Bitts Park.

The following day - June 18 - will see thousands turn out to take part in the traditional 10K and 5K non-competitive events.

Participants can run or walk the routes.
