A police officer who is tackling the New York City Marathon will be able to line up knowing she’s reached her ambitious fundraising target.

Inspector Mo Kelly, who is currently based at Cumbria Constabulary’s headquarters in Penrith, has raised more than £2,500.

The 37-year-old will be representing the force in the race on November 6. The money she’s raised will be going into the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, set up after she was murdered in Manchester in 2012.

It aims to provide learning opportunities through grants or services to people under the age of 21 who have suffered a tragic loss of a close family member through a violent crime such as murder or manslaughter.

Mo said: “I am totally overwhelmed with the level of support from friends, colleagues and members of the public who have donated money and time to help raise as much funds as possible. It is only just over a month away from the race and I am very excited to be taking part.

“The money will make a huge difference to someone who has had to live through the true horror of losing a close family member at such a young age.”

Mo is still accepting donations at www.justgiving.com/m-kelly4 or by texting MKSD79 with an amount to 70070.
