A motorist hit speeds of 80mph in a 30mph zone as she led police on a high speed chased through Cumbria and south west Scotland.

Victoria Williams, 42, of Solway Holiday Village at Silloth, pleaded guilty to a string of motoring offences when she appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

The chase by an unmarked police car took in roads around Rigg, where she took a bend and crossed into the opposite carriageway at 58mph in the 30mph limit.

At Gretna Williams was recorded reached 80mph in the 30mph limit, before driving around a roundabout in the wrong direction and then heading onto the M6.

The police chase continued along the motorway into Cumbria, where the court heard she sped through roadworks and even topped 90mph in the hard shoulder as she undertook a lorry.

At junction 44, Williams failed to stop for red lights, crossed into the path of other vehicles and took the roundabout at excessive speed, eventually losing control of the van and crashing into a barrier.

Sheriff George Jamieson described the charge as "serious" and said background reports would be necessary.

She was given an interim driving ban ahead of her sentencing next month.
