A footballer had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering an horrific injury in a match.

The Great North Air Ambulance's Pride of Cumbria helicopter was scrambled to the match at the request of the North West Ambulance Service after the footballer's injury was deemed to be so serious.

The match was taking place at Kirkby Stephen about 4.30pm yesterday.

The player, who is in his 30s, required immediate surgery and was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

He arrived in a stable condition and the journey took 15 minutes.
