A tea lady got more than she bargained for when attended the Cumbria Sports Awards - she ended up dancing on stage with double Olympic medalist Lutalo Muhammad.

The taekwondo star shot to fame at the Rio Olympics when he cried at missing out on gold by a fraction of a second and recently won the Strictly Come Dancing special for Children in Need.

So when he offered to dance with a member of the audience at the sports awards the lively contingent from Workington Cricket Club ‘volunteered’ their popular tea lady Alwyn Ogilvie.

At first she was reluctant, but soon Lutalo and her were thrilling the audience at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere, with their moves to the Lady Ga Ga’s Edge of Glory.

Afterwards Alwyn described the experience as “fantastic” and invited Lutalo to visit Workington Cricket Club next year.

The club were at the event - organised by Active Cumbria - to receive the Team of the Year award after winning every single game in the 2016 season. Other winners on the night included Longtown badminton star Lauren Smith who won Sports Personality of the Year and England cricketer Ben Stokes who won Performance of the Year.

Lutalo Muhammad told the audience that he would carry on with his quest for glory. “I got bronze in London, silver in Rio and it’ll be gold in Tokyo.”

After the event Lutalo said he was delighted to hear about the News & Star’s Go Active campaign to get more Cumbrians taking regular exercise.

“Yes, that sounds a brilliant approach - let’s get Britain moving. Sport should be for everybody, whatever your age or ability. If you’re active you’ll be healthier and happier and hopefully the Olympics will have encouraged more people to get active.

“Sport has so many benefits. For young people it can keep them out of trouble, give them some discipline and teach them skills that they can use in the world of business.

“Sport is so beautiful - we need to get everyone involved.”

Lutalo Muhammad was a attending the Cumbria Sports Awards as a guest of GLL which runs the majority of sports centres in the county and is now launching its sports foundation in Cumbria.

The foundation gives financial support to talented athletes and their families. Lutalo said: “GLL has been fantastic for me. They were the first people who gave my parents money to help with my training and to have an organisation believe in me was so good for my confidence.”
