University staff are being urged to get active as part of a week-long campaign launched following the death of a former student.

Special courses, fitness tests and health advice are on offer throughout what has been dubbed the University of Cumbria's 'Healthy Week'.

Staff are also being challenged to jointly run, walk and cycle 500 miles in memory of sports science student Adam Rogers.

The 24-year-old died in Blackburn in July 2009 after being punched while acting as a peacemaker during a disturbance.

His death prompted a campaign to tackle alcohol-related violence, with money raised this week going to the cause.

Healthy Week will see a wide range of fitness classes running each day, ranging from circuit training to Zumba.

Simple exercises which can be completed while sat at a desk have also been devised by university specialist sports teams, aimed at boosting activity in the workplace.

Tim Barry, head of the University of Cumbria's medical and sport sciences department, said: “We’re all too aware that not taking a break, let alone doing something in that time, is becoming part of the culture of work life in the UK.

“We’re aiming to do something about that mentality and demonstrate to all staff that there are simple measures they can take every day that will have a lasting impact on both their physical and mental health.”

Meanwhile the fundraiser set up in memory of the former student is providing an extra incentive to staff across all campuses.

Mr Barry added: “It’s something dear to many here who were understandably affected by Adam's death.

“We’re challenging staff to collaboratively walk, run and cycle 500 miles and raise money towards his family’s campaign ‘Every Action Has Consequences’ to ensure he’s remembered for helping achieve something positive.”

Healthy Week runs until Friday, with events being held at all of the university's campuses.

Adam's parents, Pat and Dave Rogers, who set up the campaign in his memory, are backing the event.

His mum said: “Dave and I would just like to say a massive thanks for organising this event and remembering Adam in this way which fits in so well with his love of sport.

”We are particularly grateful for any fundraising as trying to raise enough money to keep the charity going is one of the hardest things for us.”

Pat is also taking part in the fundraiser and has pledged to cover at least five miles each day this week, going towards the final total.
