Crowds of excited fans packed into Carlisle's Bitts Park yesterday for a concert by the country's biggest girl band.

Hundreds lined up well before the gates opened in a bid to grab themselves a prime spot for the Little Mix gig.

The girls took to the stage at 8.30pm, more than two hours after fans were let into the site.

Young girls and their families were in the park before 3pm in the hope of ensuring they were able to see Jesy, Leigh Anne, Perrie and Jade up close.

Megan Lister, 11, and mum Louise, 44, of Workington, are hardcore Little Mix fans, having already seen the band in Birmingham earlier this year.

They've also already bagged themselves a ticket for the band's Newcastle gig in November.

Louise said: "We're both fans, I think they appeal to everyone, not just the children."

Carol Chapplehow, 42, of Penrith, took her daughter Victoria, 13, to see the gig.

Carol said: "Victoria is a huge fan, she can't wait to see them. I think it's lovely that they came to Carlisle, it's nice to have these events so close to home."

Victoria, who also went to see the band in Manchester when they played as part of the X-Factor Live Tour, said she liked the band because they were sassy.

She added: "I'm really looking forward to when they'll play Power, it's my favourite song."

Daisy Irwin, 16, of Carlisle, said her favourite song was also Power.

She said: "I'm here with my friends, we're all Little Mix fans. It's my first Little Mix gig, I really like their music."

Congratulations to Little Mix on what was by all accounts a fantastic show. Sadly I couldn't be there myself, but judging by the photos and videos posted on social media, it was clear ro see that a fantastic time was had by all. It seems like only yesterday (never mind 6 years ago) that they won The X Factor though truth be told, I was originally sceptical – in those days Girls Aloud, The Saturdays & The Sugababes were dominating the UK scene. Also, they were the first Girl Group to win the contest, so there was a huge weight of expectation and even when they scored back to back Number Ones with “Cannonball” and “Wings” I still had my doubts - after all, for every Girls Aloud/Sugababes/Atomic Kitten, there is always a Supersister/Vanilla/Wonderland (in fact, I said this in the News & Star at the time). However, what changed my mind was the phenomenal success of their debut album DNA – especially in America where it hit Number 4 in the Billboard 200 – the highest ever debut position by a UK girl group. To break the charts in America is not an easy task full stop, but Little Mix did it with seemingly consummate - indeed, effortless ease. If I had to pick just one of their songs it would have to be “Love Me Like You”, which I fell in love with from the first “Sha La La La” and I also love the 7th Heaven remix. Like I said, I had my doubts in the beginning - but I'm proud to have been proved wrong and then some by Jesy, Leigh Anne, Jade and (my favourite) Perrie. I know that I speak for many when I say that these talented and lovely ladies are more than welcome back to Cumbria ANYTIME.

So nice to see so many enjoying the concerts over the last two days. However who decided to impose a c;losure on Castle way to allow coaches to exit the venue and subsequently bring Carlisle to a stop. Why isnt the Racecourse used as it is easily accessible from the M6 and buses can easily get there and with ample parking spaces for the public it makes sense. I was a bit disgruntled last night sat outside the biscuit factory in a long queue after a long 12 hour shift. Please consider this for the future .
