Motorists in the centre of Carlisle faced delays after a four-vehicle crash on one of the city's busiest roads.

The crash, in the Victoria Place area near to Richard Rose Central Academy, involved three cars and a pickup truck.

Lismore Place was blocked in both directions for almost an hour.

It happened about 8.25am and police and ambulance were called to the scene.

Vehicles involved were a Honda car driven by a Carlisle woman, a Ford Transit van driven by man from Lancashire, a Vauxhall Corsa car driven by a man from Carlisle and a Seat Ibiza car, whose driver was described by police as being "not from the area".

Traffic was directed away from the area, causing long delays for motorists heading into the city during rush hour.

There were only minor injuries as a result of the crash.
