The A595 between Carlisle and Wigton was blocked after a trailer full of cows overturned.

The emergency services were called to the scene at about 10.30am this morning, to try to free the animals.

Firefighters were forced to cut the six cows from the trailer after a vet inspection was carried out.

The cows were then escorted into pens that were 100 metres down the road.

In an update from the county's roads policing unit, officers said the cows were OK, with only a "couple of scratches" suffered.

There is no information about the driver's condition, however Cumbria Police has been contacted for details.

Eyewitnesses said the driver appeared to be safe.

The crash happened near the turn-off for Wigton at the Penrith crossroads.
