A leading councillor has pledged to take up the cause of housing estate residents fighting for a play area.

Children living on Forgehill Park in Workington have been left without somewhere to play after the developer backtracked on its promise to build one.

When Persimmon Homes was given the go-ahead to build the 92-home estate, off Mossbay Road, one of the conditions laid down by Allerdale council was for it to create a play area.

Now it has applied to remove that condition because, it said, there was no room for a play area.

Residents said they were outraged by the company's plans.

Now Moss Bay borough and town councillor Barbara Cannon, who is also on Allerdale council's executive, has pledged to help.

She said: "I've been approached several times over the last month.

"I'm now formally supporting my residents and asking Allerdale to reject the discharge of conditions application.

"Where Forgehill Park is situated it's bordered on one side by a railway line and on the other by a busy road.

"It's an estate trapped by a railway line on one side and a very busy main road on the other and therefore it seems appropriate that there's play provision for the residents.

"We have a duty to make sure children have somewhere to play."

Coun Cannon said she would talk to residents about where a play area might be possible.
