Plans to extend free parking in a Cumbrian town centre have gone back to the drawing board.

And alternatives are now being looked at to a proposal to make a section of John Street, in Workington, one-way after residents feared it would cause more disruption.

The county council revealed in January that it was looking at offering one-hour free parking in areas including Murray Road, Finkle Street and Warwick Place.

It also wanted to make the section of John Street between Jane Street and Roper Street into a one-way system.

Traffic would be flowing from Jane Street down John Street.

A consultation was carried out earlier this year, during which concerns were raised by residents of some of the streets involved in the parking review.

People were also concerned about traffic diverting into Roper Street and Peter Street if a one-way system was implemented on part of John Street.

A council spokesman said alternatives were now being looked at.

The proposals are now being reviewed and will then be subject to a further round of consultation.

Traders have been campaigning for years to have the 30-minute restriction changed and a spokesman for the county council said the majority of people on Murray Road and Finkle Street welcomed the proposals.

However, the spokesman said residents in other streets included did not welcome the plans.

A spokesman for the county council said: "All of the proposals are now being reviewed, taking into account the consultation.

"This will go into the next round of consultation in the next few weeks.

"We hope to come up with a new proposal which will please as many people as possible."
