A declaration of friendship has been drawn up between Cockermouth and its new sister town in America.

The town council was approached earlier in the summer by Ron Collins, of Hebron, in New Hampshire.

He wrote: "Our town was originally called Cockermouth. The name was changed in 1792. Hebron would like to be a sister city with Cockermouth, England."

Mr Collins visited the town with his wife in 2014. "We truly fell in love with your city," he said.

Councillors accepted the request an an earlier meeting.

Cockermouth has been twinned with Marvejols, France for 34 years. Several exchanges take place each year.

A declaration had now been drawn up for the Hebron link.

Based on the existing declaration for Marvejols, it states: “We declare our desire to promote mutual understanding between the people of our communities, not only by links between our two town administrations but also the many groups and organisations active in our communities and between our townsfolk generally.”
