More than 170 new homes are set to be built on the northern edge of Carlisle after councillors gave their full backing to the plans.

Members of Carlisle City Council’s development control committee had already granted outline permission for housing on the site, at Greymoorhill, in September 2015.

This application discussed by the committee was submitted by Story Homes earlier this year and contained plans for a total of 172 homes - a mix of two to five-bedroom properties.

Case officer Stephen Daniel said that concerns had been raised by James Bainbridge, Conservative councillor for Stanwix Rural and Stanwix Rural Parish Council, that animals buried following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease may be on the site.

However, Mr Daniel told members of the committee: "The landowner has been clear that there is no burial on this site.”

Barry Earp, who represents Wetheral, also asked questions about parking on the site - and whether traffic lights would be placed at the junction between Kingstown Road and the proposed access road.

Mr Daniel said that sufficient parking would be provided for each property, while the roads on the site would also be wide enough for cars to park.

Mr Earp added: “From one of the photographs, I can’t see any traffic lights.

"I hope there’s going to be traffic lights otherwise there will be absolute chaos.”

Members of the committee were told that although traffic lights were not visible in an image they had been shown, lights would be installed should planning permission be granted and the application given the go-ahead.

A report prepared for members of the committee ahead of the meeting stated that two letters of objection and one letter of comment had been received regarding the application.

Included in the letters of objection were concerns about the provision of primary school places in the area.

Mr Daniel said that Story Homes must provide £623,500 towards new primary school provision in the area should councillors approve the application.

Planning permission was granted unanimously by members.
