It is “business as usual” for Cumbria’s Toys”R”Us store despite the retail giant filing for bankruptcy in the United States.

The Carlisle store – which employs 15 people – is one of 110 across the country that has been declared safe by the UK subsidiary of the global toy department store chain.

In a statement, the company confirmed that its operations outside of the United States and Canada were not part of the court-supervised bankruptcy process.

Toys”R”Us Inc. said it would allow outstanding debts to be restructured and provide greater financial flexibility to invest in the continued growth of the company.

A UK-based spokesman said: “We’ve had the good news through that our UK stores, including the one in Carlisle, are not affected and that it will be business as usual.

“In fact, we’re ramping up our activity in advance of Christmas with the usual promotions and recruitment drive.”

The Carlisle store opened its doors in The Lanes Shopping Centre in August 2016.

The opening marked a revival for Toys”R”Us in the city after the chain closed its 15,000 sq ft store on St Nicholas Retail Park, off London Road in 2013, resulting in the loss of 25 jobs. The store had been open for just over two years.

Dave Brandon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Toys”R”Us Inc., said: “We are confident that we are taking the right steps to ensure that the iconic Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us brands live on for many generations.

“Our customers around the world can continue to count on an outstanding shopping experience and excellent service whenever, wherever and however they choose to shop with us. As the holiday season approaches, our global team members are ready to serve the millions of kids and families who will be shopping with us.”
