A popular Carlisle chippy has plans to open a second branch in the city.

The Fryery has submitted plans to Carlisle City Council for a branch on the corner of Newtown Road and Granville Road.

Chris Hendren, who owns The Fryery on Scotch Street, has applied for planning permission to change the use of the building from a shop to a hot food takeaway.

The building, which is opposite the Cumberland Infirmary and likely to be popular with patients, visitors and staff, used to belong to Middleham's Butchers.

The shop has been on site since 1898 when Cyril Middleham's great-grandfather bought the premises for £500.

Cyril ran the business until 2007 and then it was taken over by Scott Barton. The shop is currently empty.

The application says the takeaway would employ two full time members of staff and five part time workers.

It would open 11am to 2pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm to 9.30pm.

On a Sunday it would open from 4pm to 9.30pm.

Mr Hendren opened The Fryery - a fish and chip restaurant and takeaway - in the city centre in 2006.

He said: "It's a great location. It's near the hospital and it's a big catchment area.

"I think that area needs a good fish and chip shop. It's on a main route out of town as well and close to the bypass.

"The council wants to tidy places up and this is one place that needs it. It's an eyesore.

"We've worked really hard to build up the business and now we're looking at this new venture.

"I've got a vision for the place and lots of ideas.

"Some of the staff from our existing shop would work at the new place as they are from that side of town."
