A flood-hit Carlisle nursery has been given a handout to replace equipment damaged by Storm Desmond.

St Aidan’s Day Nursery was forced to relocate from its base on Victoria Place following the floods in December last year and is currently based at Harraby Community Campus, on Edgehill Road.

It’s been chosen to receive a £500 donation as part of a national campaign. The nursery, which provides care for children aged between three months and five years, is one of 10 in the country to receive the prize.

The grant has been provided by Sudocrem, as part of its Play More initiative, which aims to engage more youngsters in outside play.

Elma Day, the nursery’s manager, said: “It has been a tough year but we are a charity-run nursery and this £500 will go a long way to help replace some of the outdoor equipment that was damaged.”

“Children love playing outside and it’s fantastic to see so many nurseries like St Aidan’s doing all they can to improve their outdoor play areas,” added Nick Lang, Sudocrem’s brand manager.

“Being outside brings children closer to nature. It builds physical confidence and helps them form friendships. As parents and carers we have to give our children the space to play and worry less about the odd cut and graze.”
