Details have been announced of how a £12.7 million government grant will be dished out in Cumbria.

Cumbria's Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has been allocated the sum, following a bid for £165 million as part of the government's Growth Deal.

The lower-than-bid-for amount has been confirmed by Communities Secretary Sajid Javid today, and it will be shared between the following projects:

- Carlisle Station and the Citadels redevelopment - £1m

- Whitehaven town centre (including a new hotel, apartment and car park complex) - £4.5m

- Lillyhall North (redevelopment of a 26.6-acre site) - £5m

Part of the funding will also go to countywide Skills Capital (£1m) and Growing Our Potential (£1m) projects.

Mr Javid said: "As part of efforts to deliver an economy that works for everyone, the Government is equipping local people with the resources they need to drive forward local growth.

"That is why we’re giving £12.7 million of new money to Cumbria to give businesses the support and opportunities they need to achieve their potential – on top of the £47.7m million we have already awarded."

George Beveridge, chairman of the board at Cumbria LEP, added: "We welcome the allocations for Lillyhall North, Whitehaven town centre, and Carlisle Station Gateway and the Citadels, as well as for the Skills Capital and Growing Our Potential programmes.

"These projects will bring substantial economic benefits to the county.

"The LEP will continue to strongly make the case to Government for funding for the other major projects that are needed to maximise the county's economic growth and support nationally significant investment programmes.”
