Nathan Condy was the star of the show, when he embraced Carlisle's pink celebrations.

The city's market hall was a sea of pink on Saturday, as stallholders came together to raise money for a local cause.

The event was part of "Love Your Local Market Fortnight", which encourages shoppers to show their support for markets up and down the country.

But in Carlisle, it is also a charitable event, with money raised for Jigsaw children's hospice.

It is the third year that traders in the market hall have taken part in the Big Hearts and Pink Day.

"We raised about £500 last year, but we're looking to break the £1,000 mark this time," said centre manager Helen Wylie.

"Our traders each give £10 of vouchers that are then raffled off, or they donate raffle prizes instead. It's just a bit of fun.

"It's part of Love Your Local Market Fortnight and it's just about encouraging as many people as possible to come into the market."

Perhaps the star of the show was Nathan Condy, who was persuaded to wear a pink tabbard - and then had a pink tiger design painted on his face.

"He agreed to walk around looking like that to collect more sponsorship," Helen said.

"It's all part of the fun."

Nathan added: "It's for a good cause. People have been making donations so we're getting a bit more money."

Helen said that to some shoppers, walking into a market hall adorned in pink could come as a surprise, but that visitors had also dug deep to raise money for charity.

"At first I think some people wonder what's going on," she said.

"But once they know what we're doing, they're more than happy to buy a raffle ticket."

Helen added that 33 stalls had either donated prizes or bought £10 worth of vouchers.

"It's good that so many people are on board with what we're doing," she said.

"It means that we have a good foundation if we're going to try and raise more than £1,000. But really whatever we raise is a bonus, to be honest."
