The schoolboy victim of a hit and run, has told how he remembers the driver scowling at him through the window as he lay injured on the ground.

The 10-year-old is now too scared to cross the road, after the motorist sped off without stopping.

Julian Owens was on the way to school when he was hit by a car on Carlisle’s London Road.

The youngster, who attends Inglewood Juniors, was clipped by the vehicle and left lying on the road. He said the female driver saw him, but didn’t stop to check if he was okay.

It happened on the crossing outside Aldi at 8.25am last Thursday, February 16. His mum Kelly Owens is urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the police.

Julian was left in shock and doesn’t remember exactly what happened, but said the green man had either just come on or just finished when he crossed with his friends.

“My friends said ‘go’. The next thing I was on the floor. The woman was just scowling at me through the window,” he said.

“She was in the middle lane and there was a van next to her. The person in the van was asking if I was okay.”

Julian said the car was white Ford, but he isn’t sure what model. He thinks the woman was alone in the vehicle and that the car turned off down Petteril Bank Road immediately afterwards.

“I was in shock. I hurt my leg. I’m a bit worried now. I don’t like crossing busy roads,” he said.

Julian managed to get to school after the incident, and one of his classmates told the teacher. His parents, Kelly and Michael, then contacted the police.

“He is lucky he wasn’t seriously injured. What worried us most was that she could just drive off,” said his mum.

“He’s very nervous now crossing roads. He gets panicky and hasn’t been out on his own. That’s just not fair. His friend was left petrified too.”

She said whatever happened, nobody should leave a 10-year-old boy lying in the road. To just scowl through a window at him. Who on earth could do that? For all she knew he could’ve broken his leg.

“I do not know how you just drive off and carry on with your day,” added Mrs Owens, who also has a two-year-old daughter Skye.

The family, of Welsh Road, Harraby, are appealing for anyone who may recognise the vehicle to contact the police and ensure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.
