A school has spoken of its sadness after one of its former pupils tragically died when his car crashed through a bridge.

Harry Blowing's BMW 320 was the only vehicle involved in a crash on the A7, north of Langholm, on Monday evening.

Firefighters had to cut the 18-year-old free from his car and he was the airlifted to the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary where he later died.

Harry, from Etterby Scaur, Belah, was a former pupil at Carlisle's Austin Friars St Monica's School.

Speaking to the News & Star, the school's headteacher Matthew Harris paid tribute to him.

"Harry was a pupil at Austin Friars from September 2003 until July last year.

"He was a much loved, well respected and fondly remembered member of our community; he was a Friars boy through and through.

"He will be sadly missed by all in the wider school community.

"May perpetual light shine upon him and may he rest in peace."

Police Scotland say an investigation into the cause of the crash, which happened at Kirkton Burn Bridge, Ewes, is ongoing.

The road was closed to allow a full crash examination to take place and to assess the amount of damage caused to a bridge parapet.
