The Winter Olympics may be over - but the games are just beginning for pupils at one Carlisle school.

Youngsters from Caldew Lea School are hoping to emulate some of their Olympic heroes from Pyeongchang by themselves learning to fly down ski slopes.

A group of eight year four students are currently taking part in a special scheme designed to give youngsters access to sports they wouldn't normally consider doing.

Thanks to a partnership with Carlisle SnowSports Club skiing is one of the activities on offer.

The idea has now run for a few years and is led by year three teacher Jannette King.

She said: "These are children who have chosen to come along and give up their Sunday afternoon to take part in a sport they wouldn't normally experience.

"I have links with the ski club so I thought we would try and offer skiing. It's all to help their physical development.

"They absolutely love it."

The would-be gold medalists are taking part in a six-week crash course designed to learn them the basics of the sport. At the end they all hope to complete their level one skiing certificate.

They're being taken through the skills by local expert Eric Barlow.

Other pupils from the city school are taking archery.

Among the youngsters learning to ski are Tia Cottam, eight.

"I like it because it's a good way of learning new skills," she told the News & Star .

"I've really enjoyed it because I've learned a lot."

Tobias Wilson, nine, said: "I like the sliding shoes and I've really enjoyed it."
