A Carlisle pub which has undergone a six-week makeover is set to open its doors again this weekend.

The Crown Inn, in Stanwix, opens on Saturday with new management at its helm including local woman Rhona Bill who grew up there.

New owners Dianne and Iain Irving, who also run the award-winning White Mare in Beckermet, are looking forward to welcoming customers.

They moved from Stanwix in 2015 to take over the White Mare, where they've had great success including Best Pub in Cumbria and the UK’s Perfect Pint in the 2017 National Heineken Awards.

Dianne said: "It will be great to get back to Stanwix to see many good friends again and recreate the hub of the community that the Crown was once famous for.

"It has been completely transformed and promises to be one of the finest pubs in the city.”

Dianne and her husband will not be the only familiar faces in the new team. Rhona Bill, who grew up in the Crown when her mum Pam ran the pub in the 1980s, is returning as the new general manager.

Rhona, who is moving into the pub with her son Harvey, said: “I couldn’t quite believe it when Dianne called to offer me the job. We have known each other for many years, but she had no idea that I had spent my childhood in the residential flat upstairs."

The Crown, which will open seven days a week, will host live sports and live music.

A tasting menu will be served throughout December before the full menu is launched in January.

"We believe that we can make the Crown a pub for Stanwix and Carlisle to be proud of and, with Rhona at the helm, we know it will provide the perfect atmosphere for friends to gather," added Dianne.
