A drunk man racially abused a Carlisle door man because he wouldn't allow him entry to the bar.

Andrzej Fijalkowski, 36, of Lamb Street, Upperby, Carlisle, had been out of prison on licence for four days when he directed offensive racial terms towards Mohammed Saleen, who was working at the Border Rambler pub in Botchergate on January 13.

Prosecutor John Moran said the defendant threatened Mr Saleen with violence, telling him "come round the corner and fight me" after being denied entry.

The lawyer said he became increasingly abusive and then started with the racist abuse towards the victim, who is of Asian background.

Fijalkowski's comments, including the racist remarks that were repeatedly directed towards Mr Saleen over a period of about 15 minutes, were heard by members of the public.

In a statement read to the court, the doorman said: "This caused me considerable distress."

Rachel Dixon, for Fijalkowski, said her client's behaviour was influenced by alcohol.

"He didn't go out with any plan to cause disturbance," she said.

Fijalkowski was released from prison on January 9 on a period of licence due to last until April 8. He was convicted of an assault on his former partner.

The probation officer added that the defendant's engagement since his release from prison had been positive and that he was working to secure accommodation.

Magistrates said he must complete 80 hours unpaid work. He owes £50 compensation, £85 costs and an £85 surcharge to fund victim services.
