A post office in Carlisle will close temporarily on Monday for a refurbishment.

A new service point machine is being installed at the Newtown Road branch, where a modernisation programme is under way.

Customers will be able to access a range of services via the machine, say bosses.

These include services such as Special Delivery, Local Collect, home shopping returns, online banking cash deposits and withdrawals.

This will be available seven-days-a-week during the post office’s opening hours – 6am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 10pm on a Sunday.

Anne Clark, Post Office area manager, said: “We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents.

“We are confident that this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office.”

Other services include withdrawals using a Post Office Card Account and sending funds abroad using Moneygram.

Customers can pay bills, pre-order travel money, apply for travel insurance and top up mobile phones.

The branch will close temporarily at 5.30pm on Monday so the changes can be made. It is unclear exactly how long it will take.

The nearest post offices during the temporary closure are at Raffles Post Office on Shadygrove Road and Scotch Street Post Office in the city centre.
