A technician from Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary will be rubbing shoulders with some of the world's finest athletes as he joins the support crew for the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

Philip Myers, from Wigton, will be part of a 22-strong technical service team of orthotics and prosthetics professionals, welders, wheelchair technicians and support staff helping to repair and maintain equipment used by athletes.

Mr Myers has more than 25 years’ experience in the prosthetics industry, beginning his career as an apprentice prosthetic technician at the Infirmary, where he is now the workshop supervisor.

In 2011 Philip was awarded the title of "Technician of the Year" by the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists.

He will be providing technical service for the second time having worked at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

He will be part of the Ottobock team who are the official prosthetic, orthotic and wheelchair service crew track-side.

Philip Yates, managing director at Ottobock UK, said: "We are delighted Philip will be a member of the technical service team for the World Para Athletics Championships London 2017.

"Ottobock has been providing technical service since the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games, and the quality of our people, their professional expertise and years of experience is an essential service that athletes know they can rely on."

The championships will take place at the London Stadium, formerly the Olympic Stadium and now home to Premier League side West Ham United, between July 14 and 23.
