A cyclist from Carlisle has been seriously injured in a crash in the city.

The 36-year-old man was hurt after his bicycle was involved in a collision with a car.

It happened at the double mini roundabout beside St James’ Church in Denton Holme, at the junctions of St James’ Road, Norfolk Street and Norfolk Road.

The cyclist was taken to the nearby Cumberland Infirmary following the incident, which happened at about 8.45am today.

The driver of the purple Ford Fiesta involved, a 56-year-old woman from Carlisle, was shocked but was not injured.

A spokesman for Cumbria police confirmed officers closed both Norfolk Street and St James’ Road while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Motorists were being diverted via Richardson Street.

Three marked police vans and blue and white tape were used to cordon off the scene, while collision investigators wearing high visibility clothing were seen surveying the crash scene.

Sergeant Graeme Hodgson, of the police’s collision investigation unit, was among the officers at the scene.

He said it was understood that the car was travelling along St James’ Road towards the roundabout, while the cycle was coming from the Norfolk Road direction when the collision happened.

A statement released by police at 1.30pm confirmed that all roads had reopened following recovery of the vehicles.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the accident to call them on 101 and speak to PC Amos, quoting log 43 of May 31.
