Carlisle Cathedral has now re-opened following reports of a burglary.

Cumbria police has also confirmed that nothing has been stolen from the historic building.

Officers were at the scene this morning investigating after two people were seen entering the building just after midnight.

The cathedral was closed while officers worked with cathedral staff.

Four marked police vehicles were seen in the cathedral's grounds while investigations continued.

Two uniformed officers were outside the main entrance to the cathedral while a third was on the opposite site, where scaffolding has been in place for some time while major works are carried out on the historic building.

The News & Star has been informed that the closure of the cathedral resulted in two services being moved.

The first, a dementia awareness service this morning, was held in the open air while a lunchtime Eucharist for Ascension Day was relocated to the nearby Fratry building.

Police are thanking members of the public for their patience while investigations were carried out.
