Carlisle shopping centre bosses say business is booming at the city's new Primark store - and this is boosting other shops.

David Jackson, commercial director of The Lanes, where the shop is based, said traders had spoken of the positive knock-on impact.

He said: "I think it's been a very, very successful opening for Primark in terms of the sheer number of customers that have been through the store."

Mr Jackson also spoke to other retailers who he said had felt the Primark effect.

"One of the card retailers was saying they'd had their busiest Saturday for months and one of the coffee shops had been absolutely inundated," he added.

"So I think you've got to say that this weekend has been very successful.

"We knew it was going to be busy and bring a lot of people in but I think it's been busier that we thought it was going to be."
