Future doctors, nurses and medical practitioners will have the opportunity to have a taste of what's to come at a 'Career in Medicine' event.

Aspiring medical students from across Cumbria will be visiting the education centre at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle this Friday and Saturday to find out more about opportunities open to them.

The event, which is now in its fourth year, hopes to inspire potential medical students to take up the profession.

Andrew Robson, consultant ENT surgeon and course director, said: “It is incredibly important to encourage as many of Cumbria’s brightest and best to pursue a career in medicine. I am very much looking forward to welcoming more aspiring medical students to the Cumberland Infirmary on Friday.

“It is vital to nurture talent and provide support to these students who may be part of the future of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust.”

Local school children across years 11 to 13 who are considering studying medicine or pharmacy will have the chance to meet senior and junior medical staff and gain top tips for getting into medicine.

Anyone who has already left school and is considering studying medicine as a postgraduate degree is also welcome.

The sessions will cover a range of topics including Medical School Applications Q&A; Cardiology; Acute Medicine and Intensive Care; Neurology; Cancer and Radiology; Saw Bone – Trauma and Orthopaedics; Life as a GP Trainee; Obstetric Workshop Neo-Natal Care; Laparoscopy; Ears Nose and Throat; Suturing; Advanced Trauma Life Support.
