John Greenbank, Cumbria Trading Standards Manager, said:

“Scam websites deliberately use attractive looking deals and time limited offers to rush consumers in to making a decision, trying to take away the time for doing your own research.

"Our overall advice is to trust your instincts – if an offer looks too good to be true it probably is! Some simple online research, using web forums and trusted review sites, can often give you more information to help your decision making.”

Tips for shopping online on Black Friday and Cyber Monday:

Research the website first

The best way to see if a website is genuine or not is to check the reviews for the site.

Check the website is secure

Look out for a padlock at the bottom of the screen, which indicates the website is secure.

Don't send cash by a money transfer system

If a website asks you to transfer money to them, it's probably a scam.

If it looks too good to be true it probably is

If something is heavily discounted, be careful.
