A woman has been taken to hospital following a collision on the A595.

The collision involved a cyclist and a car near Bigrigg.

The woman, who is believed to be around 30, has been taken to the West Cumberland Hospital by ambulance, said an ambulance service spokesman. Her condition is not known.

Emergency services were called to the collision between a car and a cyclist at the A595 junction near Springfield Road at around 3.15pm.

A police spokesman said it involved a Mini Cooper car, driven by a man, and a female cyclist.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said an ambulance, helicopter, rapid response vehicle and an advanced paramedic were called out to the scene.

The road has been blocked and traffic is backed up from the scene to Westlakes Science and Technology Park.

Police have reported that there is slow traffic on the A595 as people slow down to look at the accident on the other side of the road.

St Bees Main Street is also gridlocked following the incident.

Traffic is now being diverted at the Mirehouse junction of the A595.
