Carlisle Remembrance commemorations continue to build up with the release of 400 tickets for a moving church service.

The Festival of Remembrance will take place at St Cuthbert's Church in the city centre next Friday evening.

Tickets for the 7pm event, organised by the Carlisle and Stanwix branch of the Royal British Legion, are free and available on a first come, first served basis.

Tickets are available now from the tourist information centre.

Details of the service have been released as Carlisle hosted its first Poppy Day.

Organisers hope they have surpassed their £5,000 fundraising target.

The high-profile campaign aimed to launched this year's Poppy Appeal with events across the city.

It featured a city centre flash mob featuring dancers from Richard Rose Central Academy and an abseil down Carlisle's Civic Centre.

A host of leading firms also supported Poppy Day including Marks & Spencer, where English Street staff did a static bike ride.

Judith Reay, the Royal British Legion's community fundraiser for Cumbria, said: "The whole day was incredible.

"Everything was so successful from the train arriving at the station with our volunteers on to the abseil down the civic centre where we had 50 people taking part. We even had our Poppy Man mascot abseil down the building, he was determined to do it."

Meanwhile an artistic appeal to create 2,107 poppies in time for Remembrance is continuing.

Former art teacher Abigail Kilfedder has invited people to create some of the poppies which will go on display in St Michael's Church, Stanwix.

Groups helping to create the poppies include Belle Vue and Cumwhinton Schools, Stanwix Playgroup and Brampton Playgroup.
