Three roads in Copeland are to have their speed limits slashed.

Roads in Arlecdon, Moor Row and Haile will be affected after proposals were backed by members of Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Copeland last week.

The plans, which have been open to public responses, see 30mph limits introduced in all three areas.

On Skelsceugh Road, Arlecdon, there will be a 40mph ‘buffer’ along the unpopulated stretch of the road, with a 30mph restriction in built-up areas. Initial feedback to the scheme was “extremely positive”, and no objections were received during consultation.

Another change will see a short stretch of 30mph at Moor Row, in place of the existing National Speed Limit, near the junction with the A595.

Traffic concerns have long been a problem in Moor Row, with cars recorded travelling at high speeds through the village.

The county council received one response to the proposal, which was strongly in favour of the change.

A 30mph limit is to be set throughout Haile. Two public responses were sent to the council, both were in favour of a reduction but requested a 20mph limit, starting further away from built-up areas.

However, the council’s highways officer Matthew Reeves said: “At this stage we would not recommend reducing the limit further, however its effectiveness would be monitored over the ensuing months.

“The extents have been carefully considered to reduce speeds at the most effective points on the approach to the built-up area.”

The new restrictions are designed to improve traffic flow and traffic management within the areas while also providing a safe and effective transport network.
