Three hundred tonnes of hay went up in flames, after a fire at an agricultural building.

The blaze broke out in an agricultural building at a farm in High Aketon, at about 10.10pm on Tuesday.

Fortunately, the building was in an isolated part of the farm, and well away from others. It contained about 300 tonnes of hay, six to eight tonnes of fertiliser and a tractor and trailer, and was “well alight” when firefighters arrived.

Crews from Aspatria, Wigton and Cockermouth set up a safety zone around the fire, while they attempted to cool it down before putting out the blaze.

After several hours fighting the flames and removing some of the barn contents, it was eventually decided to allow the building to burn out in a “controlled manner”.

The last fire engine returned to base at 3.10am yesterday.
