25% of Cumbrian workers paid below living wage

One in four workers in Cumbria – around 47,000 – are paid below the living wage, according to a new report.

The local figures, released by professional services firm KPMG, are worse than the national picture where one in five workers in the UK are paid less than what is believed to be needed for a basic standard of living.

The living wage rate is £8.30 an hour in London and £7.20 in the rest of the UK. But unlike the minimum wage employers must pay by law – £6.19 per hour for over 21s – the living rate is voluntary.

Although a number of private and public sector employers pay the living wage, most are in London. However, a number outside of the capital are beginning to introduce the increased cap, including Glasgow and Preston city councils.
