21 crashes in a day prompts Cumbria police warning

Police have urged drivers and riders to take care on Cumbria's roads after 21 accidents in A DAY.

Nine of the collisions involved motorcyclists, some of whom were seriously hurt.

Incidents included:

  • a crash at Kirklinton, near Carlisle, where a motorbike rider received serious injuries and was taken to hospital in Newcastle
  • a collision between a Triumph motorbike and Alfa Romeo Mito car at Penrith (minor injuries)
  • a crash between a Range Rover car and Ford Fiesta car at Whitehaven (slight injuries)

Chief Inspector Matt Kennerley urged motorists to remain aware and alert at all times.

“The road network in Cumbria can be challenging, even for experienced drivers/riders.

"By reducing your speed, leaving sufficient braking distance from the driver in front and taking greater care, we can reduce the risk of a collision and help to make sure everyone reaches their destination safely,” he added.

Have your say

Some very `knowledgeable` replies below, many of which are simply opinion and not the correct rules of the road.
The dreaded "muppet drivers tootling along the A595 and A66 (between the west coast and the M6) at 35-40mph?"
The dreaded `national speed limit,` which actually is not the speed you must drive at, but the speed you must NOT drive faster than for the type of vehicle. (it doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive at this speed in all conditions) The national speed limit sign which is very clever in the fact that it reduces the need from some seven speed limit signs down to one. Single carriageways mph limit for goods vehicles more than 7.5 tonnes maximum laden weight is ironically 40mph.
The roundabouts near Morrisons Workington need peoples full attention, yet many fail to notice the road signs (on poles and the road) that it is not a `normal` mini roundabout. Traffic flowing from Bessemer bridge towards the station has to give way to the other traffic entering the roundabout.

What are you people talking about? it isnt the roads its the useless drivers, I literally have about 5 hours of clips of our local roads and the idiots breaking the laws on them.
