£1m price tag on Cumbrian home for sale for first time in 65 years

Househunters have the chance to buy a unique ‘hidden’ home for the first time in more than 65 years – if they have £1 million to spare.
Four Gables, near Brampton, is a Grade II listed property. It has been owned by one family – the Nelsons – since 1947. It was designed by Philip Webb, who also designed the town’s St Martin’s Church.
Despite this pedigree, though, few people in the town are likely to know about the house.
This is because it is almost completely hidden to anyone who is not standing within its grounds, which extend for more than 14 acres.
Its current occupants are Roger and Sally Nelson, aged 78 and 71 respectively.
Mrs Nelson told The Cumberland News it would be difficult to say goodbye to the home.
“It is going to be a big wrench but we have got to be practical,” she said.
Her husband was a doctor in Brampton and first moved into the home when he was about 13 when it was owned by his father, Digby.
The couple lived in a cottage in the grounds shortly after they married and later, in the early 1960s, set up home in the main structure.
“I have always felt safe here, and secure,” said Mrs Nelson. The pair raised their three children in the home.
But it isn’t practical for any of them to move in so they have decided to put the house up for sale.
It was built in 1878 when it was part of the Naworth estate. The home has five bedrooms and four reception rooms.
It is set in 14.6 acres, which contain some extremely well-kept gardens, a double garage.
The couple are passionate gardeners. Their garden features a wide variety of flora and fauna, including blue poppies.
Mrs Nelson suggested the home would be a good buy for anyone who enjoys gardening.
She also pointed out that there is a cottage on the estate – named Little Gable.
“It [Four Gables] is Grade II listed so there is a limit to what you can do,” she added.
Little Gable is not listed and could offer some development potential.

Meanwhile, one of Cumbria’s most historic stately homes is on the market for more than £1.4m.
Ten-bedroom Netherby Hall, outside of Longtown, is up for sale. It has 10 bedrooms, seven reception rooms and is set in a 17.36-acre estate.
The price for all of this extra room is £1,475,000. It dates back to the 14th century and has played an important part in the history of Cumbria and southern Scotland.
Originally it was a tower, built by the Graham family during the Reiver period.
However, the family was frequently in trouble with the authorities in the 16th century and was exiled on several occasions. It was later part of the Jacobite rebellion.
In the 18th and 19th century though the family set about improving the estate and added extensions on to the original tower.
Sir Walter Scott was a frequent visitor and is believed to have written the poem Young Lochinvar there.
The grounds of the property include a Victorian pleasure garden and a walled garden. There are also several cottages, which could be sold separately in the future.
