Rubbish and recycling has been going uncollected in west Cumbria because bin lorries are too large for some of the area's most narrow roads.

In some areas of Allerdale, refuse and recycling collectors have been stopped from completing their rounds as they have found a number of rural roads too small or narrow for their vehicles.

One such area was Marron Lane at Bridgefoot, where recycling collections were not initially made after the new contract came in in April.

A council spokesman said some issues had been encountered getting certain vehicles down some roads because of the sizes of the lorries and the space needed to turn them.

But he added that work was under way to put the affected households on a different round completed by a smaller vehicle.

The spokesman said: “I understand with regards to Marron Lane that we have added the properties, which were getting kerbside recycling before the changes, to a round to get it under the new service.”

If you are experiencing any issues with your refuse and recycling collections you can report them by visiting www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/bincollections, using the MyAllerdale mobile app or calling 0303 123 1702.
