MOTORISTS in Carlisle are being warned of more roadworks as the next phase of a £14m scheme to upgrade the city's biggest water mains gets underway.

It's part of a four year project by United Utilities which involves cleaning and lining 32km of pipeline, some of which is more than 90 years old.

From Monday, St Cuthbert's Street will be closed for three weeks. The water firm said it needs to install a new valve near the junction with London Road.

This means traffic on London Road will be subject to two way traffic lights for the first seven days of work.

To minimise disruption, the lights will be manned between the hours of 7am until 7pm, to ensure the free flow of traffic. This will be extended until 10pm on November 3 to accommodate additional traffic expected Carlisle Fireshow.

Local diversions via Brook Street, Linton Street, Oswald Street and Lindisfarne Street will be sign-posted.

The lights are expected to be removed by Monday November 5.

United Utilities started the project in February 2016 to improve the water network which supplies about 43,000 properties.

The programme of work - split across nine projects - aims to improve the quality of water for customers in the Carlisle area.

Elsewhere, work is underway in villages to the east of Carlisle. A road closure is in place on a minor route between Wetheral and Cumwhinton with a diversion along the B6263. This is expected to reopen on on Monday November 19. here is also traffic lights in place on Steele's Bank until Friday November 16 and a road closure in Scotby in at the Royal Oak.

The work is being carried out with no interruption to people's water supplies.
