A man has died following a crash on the A66 near Workington.

It happened yesterday morning on the Stainburn to Great Clifton bypass.

Police have now confirmed that a man in his twenties from Wigton has died.

He was driving a Ford Focus, which was in collision with an HGV.

It happened at 7.20am.

A spokesman said: "Cumbria Police can confirm that a man in his twenties from Wigton died in yesterday's collision on the A66 at Stainburn.

"The deceased was the driver of a Ford Focus involved in a collision with a HGV."

The road was closed in both directions, between the Chapel Brow and Stainburn roundabouts, for six hours following the crash.

The North West Ambulance Service and Cumbria Fire and Rescue also attended the scene as there was a subsequent fire at the site.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Firefighters used one breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for one hour and 20 minutes.”

The road was shut for about six hours, with motorists diverted on surrounding routes.

It eventually reopened at about 1.15pm.

The cause of the collision is now being investigated by specialist police crash investigators.
