A 90-YEAR-OLD man from Carlisle has died following a two vehicle crash in Carlisle.

Following the crash officers were forced to close London Road in both directions, while they dealt with the incident.

The collision, which involved a Nissan Micra car and a Mercedes van, occurred at about 12.45pm near to the Harraby Inn.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, closing the stretch of road between Herbert Street and Eastern Way, while ambulance crews attended to the casualties.

The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger and driver of the Mercedes van, who are both from west Cumbria, were taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service were also called to the scene, but they did not airlift anyone away.

Fire crews from both Carlisle East and Carlisle West fire stations were also in attendance.

Cumbria Police has now confirmed that the road has been reopened.

Witnesses are asked to call 101, quoting incident number 117 of October 18.
