A psychiatric patient who caused damage at a Carlisle's Carleton Clinic asked a judge to send him to jail rather than back to hospital.

George Tipper, 30, admitted damaging doors at the clinic on dates in June and July. He admitted three counts of criminal damage.

John Moran, prosecuting, said that on the first occasion Tipper kicked a door because he was not allowed to leave the clinic's Hadrian Unit to buy cigarettes.

"He said he does not want to be in the Carleton Clinic; he wants to be in Barrow. They don't have cigarettes and they keep injecting him with stuff that he does not like," said Mr Moran.

Lauen Heasley, for Tipper, said he had no memory of the offences but wanted to apologise to the staff. She said the defendant had been in the clinic for a year, having treatment for bipolar disorder.

The judge imposed a fine of £25 for each of the three offences; £260 compensation; and costs of £85.
