THE VENUE and date for the Solway's first ever pride event has been finalised.

Silloth Pride has been confirmed for June 29, 2019 and will take place on Silloth Green.

The event application was discussed at a full meeting of Silloth town council on October 1, which saw councillors vote in favour of the event.

Organising the event is Silloth town councilllor, Owen Martin, who is gay. He said: “The council gave us the go-ahead to use the green, we can now start getting the plans sorted, fixing sponsorship, entertainment, and all that stuff.

"We have a talk from Jonathan Blake, he is a HIV activist. One of the activists in the film Pride is based on him. He was part of the group of gay and lesbians miners who come together to support the miners."

Owen continued: "We can't wait to welcome him to Silloth, he is a very well-known person to get. To get somebody like that to the first Silloth Pride is brilliant.

"We can start looking at sponsorship now and get local groups involved. It will be nice to get as many people involved as possible."

Anyone wishing to help out with fundraising or organising, is asked to contact the Silloth Pride 2019 Facebook page.
