A Carlisle man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a 19-year-old woman was killed in a crash on the A66 this morning.

Casey Leigh Sowerby, of Workington, died in the crash between Broughton Cross and Bridgefoot, near Cockermouth.

It happened shortly before 8am and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The collision involved a Citroen C3 car and a Citroen Berlingo van.

Casey, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Specially-trained officers are working with her family.

The driver and a passenger in the Citroen Berlingo suffered minor injuries.

A police spokesman said: "The driver of the Citroen Berlingo - a 31-year-old man - was arrested on suspicion of drug driving prior to attending hospital.

"He has been released under investigation while officers continue with their investigation."

The road reopened at about 12.40pm.

"Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed what took place and has yet to come forward," the police spokesman added.

The Great North Air Ambulance was also called to the scene.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: "I can confirm that we were activated at 8am after reports of a road traffic incident on the A66 near Workington."

Police closed the road both ways between the A595 Chapel Brow roundabout at Bridgefoot and Broughton Cross.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed what took place and has yet to come forward.
